Nextep Review 2026

Founder-led Oklahoma PEO with CPEO certification and ESAC accreditation since 2004

Founded: 1997·Best for: 10 to 200 employees (sweet spot: 20 to 100)·PEPM, quoted per client

Our take

Nextep is a credible regional pick for small and mid-size employers, especially in Oklahoma and the surrounding Southwest, where its local offices translate into a service team you can actually name. The credential stack is genuinely strong: CPEO from the program's first cohort and unbroken ESAC accreditation going back to 2004, which is a better compliance signal than most PEOs of this size can show. Where we push back is scale, since a regional worksite-employee base usually means less leverage on master medical rates than a national carrier arrangement delivers. We would run Nextep head to head on benefit renewal projections against at least one national PEO before signing.

What Nextep does well

  • Listed on the IRS Certified PEO register under Nextep, Inc. and its Nextep Business Solutions entities, effective January 2017
  • ESAC accredited continuously since 2004, one of the longer unbroken records in the industry
  • Independent and founder-led, so service model has not been reshuffled by private equity ownership
  • Local office footprint expanded to roughly 20 U.S. locations across about 15 states as of 2026
  • Proprietary Elevate by Nextep employee app for payroll, benefits and self-service

Watch-outs and limitations

  • Smaller worksite-employee base than national top-10 PEOs, which limits master medical leverage
  • No published pricing: every quote requires a sales conversation
  • Coverage is concentrated in the Southwest, Midwest and Southeast rather than truly national
  • Brand recognition is low outside its regional markets
